RETURNING ADULTS/TRANSFER STUDENTS
Resources for Returning Adult (non-traditional) students
Returning Adult students (sometimes referred to as non-traditional students) are students who are beginning or re-entering college following a break in their formal education. The Returning Adult program at Dixie State College was organized in 1987 to help non-traditional students make the transition to college life by helping them:
- Integrate into the college community.
- Increase communication with Returning Adult students.
- Participate in social activities with other older students.
- Improve study skills.
- Provide service and leadership opportunities.
The Returning Adult program at Dixie has 2 components: *The Returning Adult Forum and *The L³ (Lifelong learning) Club.
*The Returning Adult Forum is a weekly class where students listen to speakers and discuss subjects including adult study skills, time management, and life skills. The forum is also an excellent opportunity to establish a network of friends who are in similar circumstances.
*The L³ Club is one of the well-established clubs on campus and is subsidized by student fees. The main purpose of the club is to organize social functions for non-traditional students and their families. It is also a tremendous opportunity to learn and practice leadership skills, offer service, and just have fun! The club has a number of officer positions where Returning Adults can offer service and make a difference. The L³ Club was recognized as the DSC Club of the Year in 2006. (The L³ Club was called the NETO Club in 2006).
Currently, David Zundel in the Academic Advisement Center conducts and is responsible for the weekly Returning Adult forums. Gordon Russell, a professor of Math on the Hurricane campus, is the club advisor. Kathy Kinney, director of the Career Center, is a consultant to the Returning Adult Program. The faculty and staff at Dixie State College are very supportive of Returning Adult students who comprise approximately 25% of the student body.
