Fall, spring, and summer graduates will be honored at Dixie State College of Utah’s Commencement Ceremony on Friday, May 7, 2010, at 6:00 p.m., in the Burns Arena. The ceremony provides an opportunity for the College to pay special tribute to the graduates for the outstanding efforts they have shown in earning their degrees. This is an opportunity for the graduates to share the excitement and importance of their academic accomplishments with faculty, fellow graduates, family, and friends. Help join in the celebration of the graduates’ achievements at this very important event.
All mailings regarding Graduation are sent to a student’s permanent mailing address. If a student has not received any mailings in regard to commencement, contact the DSC Advisement Office at (435) 652-7690, or stop by and pick up a graduation letter.
The graduate line-up will be at 5:00 p.m., outside between the Eccles Fine Arts Center and the Education and Family Studies Building. Graduates will need to be in their cap and gown to line up for the Processional.
There will not be a rehearsal for graduates.
Tickets are not required for graduates. Your seating is reserved. Accommodations are made for students requiring wheelchair accessibility. Please contact DSC Disability Center Coordinator Colin Metzger at 435-879-4692, for specific seating requirements or if assistance is needed ascending and descending the stage during the ceremony.
There are no Commencement tickets – seating is open in the Burns Arena. All guests are asked to be seated by 5:45 pm.
The Commencement Ceremony will be held on Friday, May 7, 2010, at 6:00 p.m., in the Burns Arena.
Graduates will receive their diploma covers at the Commencement Ceremony. Your diploma will be mailed after final grades are reviewed and graduation requirements are verified as completed. Diplomas will be mailed within 12 weeks of the graduation date to a permanent address on file.
Parking will be available on campus for all graduates and their family and friends.
The ceremony will be interpreted in American Sign Language (ASL) for the hearing-impaired. Seating will be reserved near the front of the stage on the right facing the stage. Please contact DSC Disability Center Coordinator Colin Metzger at 435-879-4692, for specific seating arrangements.
The cap and gown should be picked up at the Stephen and Marcia Wade Alumni House, located on the corner of 700 East and 500 South, just across from Hansen Stadium from Tuesday, May 4 – Thursday, May 6, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Grad Fair takes place at the Wade Alumni House. Stop by to pick up your cap & gown, receive an alumni gift package consisting of a bottle of Dixie Red Sand and bank bag to put all your money in that you are going to make after graduation.
The annual Dixie Awards will be held Wednesday, April 21st, in the Eccles Fine Arts Center beginning at 7:00 p.m. This event continues the rich Dixie State College tradition of honoring students for their academic success as well as student contributions outside of the classroom. There will be a reception for nominees and their guests at 6:00 p.m.
The Honors medallions will be available for pick-up at the Dixie Awards reception beginning at 6:00 p.m., on April 21. A representative from the Office of the Academic Vice President will distribute this important part of honors graduates’ regalia. Gifts are available at the Alumni House located on the corner of 700 E 500 S across from the Hansen Stadium from Tuesday, May 4 – Thursday, May 6 from 9 A.M. – 5 P.M.
The President’s Reception and Graduate Luncheon for all graduates will be held in the Gardner Center Ballroom on Friday, May 7, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The luncheon is free for graduates. Additional tickets may be purchased at $11.00 for adults and $7 for children 12 and under. Tickets will be available at the Avenna Center Ticket Office or by calling 435-652-7800.
To be eligible to graduate, you must meet with your Academic Program Advisor, complete a degree audit, and complete an online graduation application. The degree audit must be filled out prior to the published deadline for the semester of intended graduation. Only degree seeking students may participate in commencement. For any questions regarding the degree audit or online application, contact your Academic Program Advisor.
Dixie State College has contracted with Gradimages Photography to take a photograph of each graduate as he or she walks through the D and across the stage. Within a couple of weeks after the ceremony, Gradimages will send proofs to each graduate’s permanent address. Students are under no obligation to purchase additional prints. DSC does not benefit financially from this arrangement. It is provided as a service to the graduates and their families. Graduate candidates should wear the tassel on the right side initially; tassels will be moved to the left side upon graduation.
JIM COX
Jim Cox was born to Loraine and Anna Cox and raised in St. George with his sisters: Loretta, Sylvia, Cami and brother Gerald. He was active in scouting and obtained his Eagle Scout Award at thirteen years old. He graduated from Dixie High School, Dixie State College, and SUU.
He attended BYU and USU, majoring in counseling, and received a Utah State School of Counseling Certificate from University of Utah. Jim’s first counseling assignment was at Hurricane High School, and during those years completed work on his Master’s Degree in Counseling at UNLV.
Jim worked 14 years as a high school counselor before arriving at Dixie State College, where served as the coordinator of their Testing Center, which administered about 200 tests per year. For 26 years at Dixie State, Jim directed the Testing Center growth to over 70,000 tests per year. He cherishes the memories of thousands of students he was able to counsel and hundreds of friends and colleagues.
In addition, Jim was the Dixie State College Rodeo Club advisor for 10 years. In his tenure, five National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association rodeos were sponsored during those years, with monetary support from the St. George Lion’s Club, an organization Jim has been a member of for 26 years.
While attending BYU, Jim married Betty Lou Morris, had six wonderful children: Darryn Cox, Miquelle Baynham, Kyle Cox, Deniece Hafen, Darrick Cox, Jamie Cox, but later divorced. In 1997 Jim married Ramona Rae Kent and helped her raise five more wonderful children: Jennifer Bracken, Dave Kent, Kathy Kent, Shawna Kent, and Craig Steven Kent. Together Jim and Ramona have twenty-eight grandchildren to share and spoil.
Jim is currently on a local mission at the LDS Employment Center, and holds other ecclesiastical duties. He enjoys four-wheeling on trails all over southern Utah, Arizona, and Nevada with his retired friends every week. Jim loves mowing, pruning, and relaxing at his Pine Valley cabin property and is grateful for the time he spends with his wife Ramona talking and working on a weekly honey-do-list.
DAVE ZUNDEL
David Zundel was born in Malad City, Idaho in 1941 to a farmer and a school teacher. After graduating from Malad High school, he moved to Alaska to earn money for college. He attended Idaho State University until called on an LDS mission to the central states area. Upon his return from his mission, he transferred to BYU and graduated with a degree in psychology in 1967.
David worked for a number of years for the LDS Church Education System, during which time he entered graduate school at the University of Florida majoring in counseling. He then moved to Northern Idaho to be a high school counselor at Post Falls High School. Later, he started a private school ”North Idaho Christian Academy” in the Coeur` de Lane area.
For a number of years Mr. Zundel tried his hand as an entrepreneur starting a number of businesses associated with the forest industry. He eventually went back to Southern Idaho where he started Gem Stone Masonry and worked as a stone- mason. When the economy of Idaho faltered, Dave moved to Alaska again and worked in the aviation industry eventually becoming the Executive Director of the Alaska Air Carriers Association.
Upon his return from Alaska, he began his career at Dixie State College of Utah. David started at Dixie as a part time reading and study skills instructor, but eventually moved into the Advisement /Counseling Center where he retired after twelve years as an Academic Advisor.
He is married to the former Shauna Lee Ashton of Hurricane and has seven children from a previous marriage. He is the proud “Granddad “ of twenty -three grandchildren.
Mr. Zundel is actively working to provide scholarships for Native American students through an annual American Indian Services golf tournament held in St. George each spring. He plans to start restoring a log home on his families homestead property in Samaria, Idaho near Malad, after this year’s golf tournament.
He will then become a “snowbird” dividing his time between Idaho and Southern Utah.
SHIRLEY DAVIS
Shirley came to Dixie in 2003 with a Ph.D. from New Mexico State University with an emphasis in educational technology and gifted education. She was tenured in 2007. In addition to excellence in teaching in Education department, a major focus of Shirley’s tenure was to bring Dixie into the 21st century, with digital classrooms, WiFi for students, and grants for her students and elementary schools to promote hands-on science learning. Dr. Davis’ hard work and expertise will impact Southern Utah’s education for generations to come. A student commented, “Dr. Davis teaches with passion, inspires us to think in new ways, and has been a great mentor to help me become an effective teacher.” Thank you, Dr. Davis, for your service to Dixie State College and its faculty, staff, and students.
Shirley plans to spend the next few years working in Hong Kong with her husband, Elwin, for the LDS Church.
