Surgical Technology Program


Program Description

The Dixie State College of Utah Surgical Technology Program is taught in conjunction with Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George, Utah. Our courses will prepare the student to function as a Surgical Technologist in a hospital or surgical center operating room.


After completion of prerequisite courses, the program can be completed in two semesters. Students who successfully complete the program will receive a certificate from the college. Graduates will be eligible to sit for the National Certification Exam.


 

Admissions:
Applicants will be admitted into the program without discrimination in regards to age, sex, creed, ethnic origin, or marital status. Space in the program is limited. Application points will be given for the following:

  • Prerequisite courses (Average GPA of 2.0 (C) or higher required)
  • PSB-Health Occupations Aptitude Test
  • Personal References (2)
  • Personal Letter
  • Personal Interview with members of the Surgical Technology Admissions Committee.
  • Health Care work experience

Program starts each fall semester. Applications due June 15th.

You will be required to complete a background check after you are accepted into the program.  Please click on the button for online application.  

Requirements:

Applicants must have Intro to Writing (ENGL 1010) and Intermediate Algebra (Math 1010) completed as prerequisite courses.  If not, applicants must have college entry level English and Math scores, or ACT scores that reflect competency in these subjects. It is the applicant's responsibility to receive advisement for eligibility requirements.

  • Other prerequisites include:
    • Math 1010 Intermediate Algebra
    • ENGL 1010
    • HLOC 1000 Medical Terminology
    • BIOL 2320/2325 Human Anatomy/Lab (Highly Recommended)

(BIOL 1200 Human Biology may be substituted, but not recommended)

Note:  BIOL 1610 Biology I and BIOL 1615 Biology I Lab are prerequisites for BIOL 2320/2325 Human Anatomy/Lab OR BIOL 1010 General Biology is a prerequisite for BIOL 1200 Human Biology)

 

 


Health Requirements:
Students accepted into the Surgical Technology program will be required to meet certain health and safety standards. These are required by the clinical facilities:
  • Immunizations:
    • Verification of 2 MMR (Measles Mumps Rubella) immunizations or Titer showing immunity
    • TDaP immunization. MUST include Pertussis. Waiver required if tetanus shot received in last 2 years.
    • Negative Tuberculosis Skin Test (TB Skin Test), Chest X-ray or verification of prior treatment for TB. Must be good through program completion (1 year)
    • Hepatitis B series (3 required) At least 2 must be completed before program start. Allow 4 weeks between first two. The third one is due five months later. (Students who decline the immunizations may sign a waiver)
    • Chicken Pox vaccination or letter verifying you had Chicken Pox or titer showing immunity
  • CPR Certification. Healthcare Provider level Cardiopulmonary   Resuscitation. (American Red Cross expires every year. American Heart Association expires every 2 years.)
  • 5-panel Drug Screen Cost: $30-$50
  • Background Screening $45.00      

     


    PSB Health Occupations Aptitude Test:
    Each applicant will be required to complete this test prior to submitting the application for the program. It helps determine if the applicant's education, training and experience are compatible with the Surgical Technology program requirements. Information about the test is included with the application packet. There are 5 categories in the test:

    • Academic Aptitude 
    • Spelling 
    • Reading Comprehension

    • Information in the Natural Sciences
    • Vocational Adjustment Index

    Personal References:
    Each applicant will be required to submit two acceptable recommendation forms. (included in the application packet) These should be from a direct supervisor or someone in the healthcare field.

    Personal Letter:
    This letter should include:

      Why you want to be a surgical technologist
      Why you feel you would be a good surgical technologist
      Your perception of yourself in regards to your ability to handle stress
      Your integrity
      your ability to listen and receive constructive criticism
      Your feelings regarding your success in the program
      Any other pertinent information such as medical problems, drugs, etc.

 Financial Assistance:
Currently there are no funds available for departmental scholarships. Students are encouraged to contact the office of financial aid to apply for academic scholarships or other types of financial aid.
