Phlebotomy

The Phlebotomy program at Dixie State College of Utah is a one semester course. For additional information please refer to the current Dixie State College Catalog or contact the advisor at (435) 879-4813

Phlebotomy (4 cr.)

The Dixie State College of Utah and Dixie Regional Medical Center Phlebotomy Program is designed to provide first hand training for students to become proficient in drawing and obtaining blood and other samples for laboratory analysis. At the conclusion of this training course, the student will be able to obtain blood from a vein or capillary using the following methods: vacutainer, syringe, butterfly, heel and finger stick. The student will learn barrier (Universal) precautions and have a better understanding of laboratory tests and procedures. The student will learn the proper handling of specimens. The student will extend this learning through completing a specified number of hours in an internship.

To be admitted into the Phlebotomy Program, you must be admitted to Dixie State College of Utah.

ADMISSION
Students interested in taking the phlebotomy course should complete the checklist and submit it together with all of the requirements below.   You may submit the checklist starting the first day of registration, and checklists will be accepted until the classes are filled.  Incomplete Checklists will not be accepted.  Please include the following:

  • COMPLETED DIXIE STATE COLLEGE OF UTAH ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
  • 5 PANEL DRUG SCREEN –  RESULTS SENT DIRECTLY TO COLLEGE Cost:  $30-$50
    • Locally:  IHC Workmed - south of Costco, or DAT Express - Riverside Dr./River Rd $30  
  •  CPR CERTIFICATION –  MUST BE Health Care Provider Level only, and must include AED training

  • HEALTH REQUIREMENTS  - Applicants are required to meet certain health and safety standards required by the clinical facilities. Documentation of these requirements must be submitted with checklist.  Please provide copies showing completion of the following: 
UPDATE:  Students are now requird to have the H1N1 vaccine or sign a waiver.  Please attach this to your checklist:   H1N1 Form
    • Verification of 2 MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) immunizations, one after age 18, OR Titer showing immunity. Waived for persons born before 1957

    • TDaP immunization as an adult Childhood DPT or Adult TD does NOT meet this requirement. MUST include Pertussis.  Waiver required if tetanus shot received in last 2 years, or student is pregnant or otherwise medically at risk. 

    • Hepatitis B series (3 required) At least 2 must be completed before program start. Allow 4 weeks between them.

    • Chicken Pox vaccination or statement by parent, doctor, or self verifying you had Chicken Pox, or titer showing immunity.

    • Negative Tuberculosis Skin Test (TB Skin Test), Chest X-ray or verification of prior treatment for TB.  Must be good through program completion (1 year) Tests are good for 12 months.

NOTE:  Titer may be used to show immunity to any of the above immunizations.   

  

Participants must have excellent interpersonal skills and a strong interest in the health care field. Students are required to practice Venipuncture procedures on each other as part of the laboratory experience.  Lab fee is required, and must be paid with tuition.
