Phlebotomy (4 cr.)
The Dixie State College of Utah and Dixie Regional Medical Center Phlebotomy Program is designed to provide first hand training for students to become proficient in drawing and obtaining blood and other samples for laboratory analysis. At the conclusion of this training course, the student will be able to obtain blood from a vein or capillary using the following methods: vacutainer, syringe, butterfly, heel and finger stick. The student will learn barrier (Universal) precautions and have a better understanding of laboratory tests and procedures. The student will learn the proper handling of specimens. The student will extend this learning through completing a specified number of hours in an internship.

To be admitted into the Phlebotomy Program, you must be admitted to Dixie State College of Utah. Application may be made online or through the Admissions Office. DSC Online Application

Admission
Students interested in taking the phlebotomy course should complete the checklist and submit it together with all of the requirements below. Students will be placed on a waiting list for the next available class.  Incomplete Checklists will not be accepted.

HEALTH REQUIREMENTS - Applicants are required to meet certain health and safety standards required by the clinical facilities. Documentation of these requirements must be submitted with checklist. Please provide copies showing completion of the following

- 5 PANEL DRUG SCREEN – Results will be sent directly to DSC.   Cost: $30-$50 -- Locally: IHC Workmed - south of Costco, or DAT Express - Riverside Dr./River Rd $30

- CPR CERTIFICATION – MUST BE Health Care Provider Level only, and must include AED training -- DSC classes available Contact Arvilla McInnes to register 435.879.4951

- BACKGROUND SCREEN - (Allow 7-14 days for results) Cost $59 Click button to go to website and open information page to get the department code and instructions:

 

- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) immunization.  Verification of two , OR Titer showing immunity. Waived for persons born before 1957

- TDaP immunization as an adult. (Childhood DPT or Adult TD does NOT meet this requirement.) MUST include Pertussis. 

- HEPATITIS B SERIES (3 required) must be completed before program start. Allow 4 weeks between first and second, and 4 months between first and third.

- CHICKEN POX immunization or statement by parent, doctor, or self verifying you had Chicken Pox, or titer showing immunity.

- NEGATIVE BASELINE TUBERCULOSIS SKIN TEST (2 TB Skin Tests), Chest X-ray or verification of prior treatment for TB.

NOTE: Titer may be used to show immunity to any of the above immunizations.

UPDATE: During Flu season, students are now required to have the vaccination.  Please attach this to your checklist: H1N1 Form (Required during flu season only)

Participants must have excellent interpersonal skills and a strong interest in the health care field. Students are required to practice Venipuncture procedures on each other as part of the laboratory experience. Lab fee is required, and must be paid with tuition.
