Respiratory Therapy Program Information
Dixie State College of Utah has a new Respiratory Therapy program. We have been granted accreditation approval by the Committee on Accreditation for Respiratory care [CoARC] to accept students and we have admitted our first students for enrollment in the program FALL SEMESTER, 2009. Students admitted to this program are eligible to sit their state and national board exams under the "Letter of Review" status; our program accreditation identifying number is 200565. Graduates from this program are eligible to become credentialed as National Board for Respiratory Care [N.B.R.C.] Certified or Registered Respiratory Therapists (C.R.T. and R.R.T.). These credentials allow therapists to become licensed to practice respiratory care in Utah and throughout the USA and Canada. The following information is provided for students or applicants.
Program length and degree: The program will require four consecutive school terms [semesters] and graduates will receive an A.A.S. [Associate of Applied Science] degree in Respiratory Therapy.
Application and Selection: Application deadline for the program is March 1. Late applications will be accepted but will be reviewed only if the on-time applicants do not meet selection criteria. Students who will be able to complete all prerequisites, including a CNA course, by the end of summer 2010 are eligible to apply for the class beginning in the Fall of 2010.

Admission Requirements
Admission to the respiratory therapy program is based upon academic performance in both general education and specific program prerequisite courses, in addition to other selection criteria, including:
1) Submission of a complete Program Application on or before the deadline [March 1];
2) Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.25 or higher;
3) Completion of specified program prerequisite courses (listed below) with a grade of "C" or better;
4) Individual interview with the Respiratory Therapy Program Selection Committee; and
5) Certification in CPR and as a C.N.A.
Additional factors that will be taken into consideration for program admission include previous health care experience and weighted GPA in specific prerequisite courses. A criminal background check and selected immunizations will be required upon acceptance to the program; please refer to the Program Application for specific immunization and fee information.

** Applicants may take any of the specified Psychology or Sociology courses as a program prerequisite, only ONE of these courses is required. Either chemistry course listed is acceptable, it is not necessary to complete a chemistry lab.
Program Schedule
Students must complete specified prerequisite courses (and the CNA course) prior to admission to the Respiratory Therapy Program. Respiratory Therapy Program courses include 59 semester hours that must be completed sequentially. The initial class will be admitted fall semester, 2009 and will graduate at the end of fall semester 2010. The second class will be selected in spring, 2010 and begin program classes in August 2010.
Classes will be taught at the Taylor Health Sciences building of the Dixie State campus, specific class schedules will vary each semester. However, students should plan to attend classes during the day at least three days of the week for approximately 6 hours of class time per day. Clinical courses will be taught at Dixie Regional Medical Center [St. George], Valley View Medical Center [Cedar City], and at selected home care/DME services and sleep labs. During the first semester there is no clinical practice (so plan on 3 days/week, approximately 8:30 am to 3:30 pm); during semesters 2, 3, and 4 students will have approximately 2 days of classes on campus and 2 days of clinical practice per week. Clinical schedules will be determined individually between students and clinical instructors so there is some flexibility in this scheduling.
