General Course Description: The Dixie Forum is a lecture series designed to introduce students to diverse ideas and personalities and to widen their world views. Students can earn one credit by attending, carefully considering the ideas expressed, and writing about the presentations. This course can be repeated up to four times.
Expectations: Students are expected to be in the Dunford Auditorium in the Browning Building by noon on the days of the Forum and are expected to remain until the presentation is over at 12:50. About once per month, the Forum will be held in the evening instead of at noon. Good manners, of course, are always necessary. Talking during presentations is discouraged, but questions are encouraged at the appropriate times.
Grades: Grades will be based upon the number of presentations attended and written about and the quality of the writing and observations. Students are also expected to attend and write about two other cultural activities on campus or two additional Forums; these might include a concert, a play, or an art exhibit.
To earn an A, students must attend at least 8 classes and two cultural activities.
To earn a B, students must attend at least 7 classes and two cultural activities.
To earn a C, students must attend at least 6 classes and two cultural activities.
To earn a D, students must attend at least 5 classes and two cultural activities.
Reaction Papers: For each presentation and each activity attended, students will write brief reaction/reflection papers. These brief essays–one or two pages in length--can focus on anything in the presentation or activity that the student finds interesting. Students are encouraged to write well, but the real key to success is to write thoughtfully. For full credit, papers should be turned in within ten days of the presentation.
